Winter can be hard on our vehicles. Between cold temperatures, icy conditions, and an unhealthy dose of road salt, the season can really deliver a beating to an unsuspecting car, truck or RV. There are all kinds of precautionary measures we can take to shore up our automobiles for the deep freeze, and the finish is no exception.
The most basic protective strategy is to wash often. Exactly how often depends on how the roads are treated where you live and drive the most — if road salts and brine applications are a common feature, you may want to wash as often as once a week. If not, you run the risk of de-icing agents working their corrosive magic on the surface of your car and laying the groundwork for some serious oxidation, also known as rust. Pay attention to the nooks and crannies, especially those in the undercarriage of your vehicle, as they can harbor build-ups of these damaging contaminants. Along with a wash, you should also give your car’s finish a nice wax to better seal it against the elements.
