Shopping around for a mechanic? Read this first.

Maybe you’ve recently relocated or your favorite mechanic closed shop. Regardless, if you’e in the market for one you want to make sure you’re making an informed decision. Here’s how to find one you can rely on:

1. Ask around. Solicit several of your friends and family members to find out their go-to. If the same business comes up more than once, you may be onto something.
2. Look online. In today’s world, it’s very easy to find Facebook, Google and Yelp reviews. What are people saying?
3. Look for the ASE seal of approval. ASE is the gold standard in the business. When a mechanic is certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) that’s a pretty good indication that they know their stuff.
4. Check with the Better Business Bureau. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few options, do a quick search on the BBB site to get a feel for public sentiment.
5. Interview prospects. Before you sign on the dotted line, ask relevant questions pertaining to experience, payment, policies, etc. Some places even offer promotional interest-free financing to help you pay for costly repairs.
6. Plan ahead. The best time to find a mechanic is when you don’t need one. If your vehicle is running without incident, use your next scheduled maintenance task as a test. How do they handle even the most simple oil change? That can be telling.

Keep in mind that price shouldn’t be the determining factor. After all, things done wrong the first time can cost you more in the end.
